#1: Legion of Merit Medal: The Legion of Merit Medal (LM, LOM) is a decoration presented by the United States Armed Forces to members of the United States Military, as well as foreign military members and political figures, who have displayed exceptionally meritorious conduct in the performance of outstanding services and achievements. The performance must be of significant importance and far exceed what is expected by normal standards. When the award is presented to foreign parties, it is divided into separate ranking degrees. The degrees are as follows: Chief Commander - issued to a head of state or government; Commander - issued to a chief of staff or higher position that is not head of state; Officer - issued to a general or flag officer that is below the chief of staff, colonel or equivalent rank; Legionnaire - issued to all other service members ranking lower than those previously mentioned. Awards presented to United State military members are not divided into degrees. Subsequent awards are denoted by Oak Leaf Clusters for U.S. Army and Air Force members and Award Stars for U.S. Navy, Marine Corps and Coast Guard members. The Valor device is also authorized to be worn by the U.S. Navy, Marine Corps and Coast Guard, but not by the U.S. Army or Air Force.
#2: Bronze Star Miniature Medal Award: Criteria: The Bronze Star Medal (BSM or BSV) is an award presented to United States Armed Forces personnel for bravery, acts of merit or meritorious service. When awarded for combat heroism it is awarded with a V device for Valor. It is the fourth highest combat award of the Armed Forces.
Originally created in February of 1944, this medal was retroactively awarded to many WWII veterans. During 1947, policy was put into place that authorized the retroactive award of the Bronze Star Medal to any serviceman who had received the Combat Infantryman Badge or the Combat Medical Badge. Both of these badges required the recommendation of a commander and had to be accompanied with a citation. Additional awards of the Bronze Star Medal are represented by Oak Leaf Clusters in the Army and Air Force while 5/16th inch Gold Stars are used by the Navy, Marine Corps and Coast Guard. Foreign Service Personnel are eligible for the award if they are serving with US Armed Forces.
#3: Air Medal with 1 Oak Leaf Pin: Is given to military personnel for meritorious achievement while participating in aerial flight; awards may also be given to acknowledge single acts of merit or heroism. The AM is mainly intended to recognize those personnel who are on current crew member or non-crew member flying status which requires them to engage in aerial flight on a regular and frequent basis in the pursuit of their primary duties. However, the AM may also be granted to other particular individuals whose combat obligations require regular and frequent flying in other than a passenger status, or individuals who complete a specifically noteworthy act while performing the function of a crew member but who are not on flying status. These individuals must accomplish a distinct contribution to the operational land combat mission or to the mission of the aircraft in flight. The AM was established on May 11,1942 and was awarded retroactive to September 8, 1939.
The U.S. Navy and U.S. Marine Corps possess two types of Air Medals: "individual" for singular meritorious acts and "strike/flight" for participation in sustained aerial flight operations. Bronze Strike/Flight numerals denote "strike/flight" awards and for "individual" AM's the valor device may be authorized. The U.S. Coast Guard issues the Air Medal with subsequent awards denoted by gold and silver stars. There are no additional devices authorized on the Coast Guard AM. The U.S. Army denotes the AM by awarded numerals displayed on the medal and ribbon. The U.S. Army and Air Force also award the Air Medal with a Valor device for acts of heroism. The Air Force does not utilize numerals on the AM. Subsequent awards are annotated with the traditional oak leaf clusters
#4: Army Commendation (ARCOM) Medal with one oak leaf pin: The Army Commendation Medal (ARCOM) is a mid-level award that is granted for consistent acts of heroism or meritorious service. The award is given by local commanders, allowing for generous interpretation of the criteria for which the medal is given. For actions where such performance was in immediate contact with an enemy force, the Valor device is approved as an attachment to the decoration. The ARCOM is frequently given to enlisted members and junior officers as an end-of-tour award. Additional awards are denoted by oak leaf clusters.
